Abstract

This study was carried out in a company dedicated to mechanical work in the southern area of Tamaulipas. The objective was to identify and correct the causes that lead to poor quality in GTAW and SMAW type welds, as well as in the assemblies of metal structures. The quality of these processes is crucial, as the work lines will later contain highly corrosive, explosive substances and at extreme temperatures. This represents a risk to the physical integrity of the operational staff and the facilities themselves. The study sought to increase the quality of welds and assemblies to reduce the number of defects found, and improve the image and reliability of the company. An analysis was carried out on the main defects that occur in welds, the environmental factors and handling that affect their quality, as well as the factors that affect the assembly of metal structures. Visual inspections were carried out before, during and after the welding and assembly processes. The environment in which these works are developed was studied and how this affects the quality with which these tasks are performed. Tools such as the Pareto diagram, Ishikawa diagram, and AMFE were used to identify factors that cause a higher index of defects. At the end of the analysis, proposals were presented to the company for review and will later be made known to workers involved in welding work and assembly of metal structures.
